Swindon’s Andy Gurney Retires

Swindon Town defender and former Captain Andy Gurney has retired today due to recurring ankle problems.

‘Andy has been forced to retire due to this recurring injury with his ankle. The pain from it has been too much and after a long hard think, he has decided to retire.’ Swindon Town manager Paul Sturrock said.

‘He is gutted and doesn’t really want to talk about it as this time so we thought it best to let everyone know what has happened. There have been a lot of discussions between myself, the medical staff and the player and this is the only road we could have gone down.’


Gurns as he was known socred 46 goals for during his professional career in over 400 starts. Gurney’s most memorable moment would be in the Carling Cup Round 2 when Gurney scored a fantastic free kick for Swindon against Leeds United.

‘I am disappointed for the boy because he has been an honest, hardworking player with a great free-kick on him. We were hoping that his versatility could have benefited us but football seems to kick you in the teeth.’ Sturrock continued.

‘Last season he played through it but it has come to the stage where he couldn’t continue. He will be well missed and everyone connected with Swindon Town Football Club will wish him all the best,’ Sturrock finished.
