Swindon Town chairman Andrew Fitton has admitted that he expects top goalscorer Billy Paynter to depart the club sooner rather than later.

Only the much talked about Rickie Lambert scored more League One goals and Paynter looks like he’ll be awarded with a Championship move.

Fitton admitted that there isn’t a lot the club can do in this situation and BP has been linked to Leeds United in recent weeks.

Paynter joined from Southend United in 2007 on Deadline Day along with JP McGovern and Simon Cox. The Liverpudlian made a swifter impact than Cox, scoring a hat trick in the 5-0 mauling of Gillingham but found goals harder to come by after that.

However, Paynter forged a great partnership with Coxacting as his wingman… Cox couldn’t score without Paynter in the side!

Without Cox at the club, Paynter filled his shoes while the goals of Charlie Austin meant that Town, FOR ONCE, had themselves a promotion chasing season.
