Swindon Town midfielder Gareth Whalley will remain at the club after he turned down an offer from the club to pay up his contract.

Whalley, 33 is in the second year of a three year deal at Swindon after signing from Premiership side Wigan prior to last season.

Whalley has featured in 2 games this season for Town after spending most of his Swindon career injured. Town manager Paul Sturrock told Whalley he was surplus to requirements at the County Ground and that they would look to either sell the player or come to terms on a release.

Whalley will now return to the squad after failing to agree terms with the club. With an injury to Paul Evans Town are without an experienced head in midfield. Whalley could fill that gap if Sturrock brings him back into the first team.

don’t wait him and what a waste when he will have no chance of being in the team, he should hurry up and get himself sorted, i would have thought being a professional footballer your main ambition would be to play regular football, obviously not.

I think his age and lack of games forced that decision by him. He might come in handy too if the injury list grows anymore.

I just think he is not good enough to be in the team
