Swindon Town Preview: The Strikers

As we get closer to the 2008/09 League One campaign we take a look at Swindon Town`s strikers and rate them out of 10.

Barry Corr – 6/10

Barry Corr could be a very dangerous striker indeed, should he be able to remain healthy. Corr`s career has been plagued by injuries thus far however when he has been healthy, he has scored. This is a big year for Corr. Should he stay fit he will be a key player this season and perhaps earn a new contract, if not he could find his football career is sadly near an end with no other club likely willing to take a chance on Corr who has been injured for most of his career. Corr was awarded the Swindon Town goal of the season last year at Bournemouth.

Billy Paynter – 7/10

The former Southend striker is very much a confidence player. When on form he can hit the back of the net. His disciplinary needs a bit of work after picking up several cards last season. Likely to start the season up front with Simon Cox. Paynter scored a hat trick last season against Gillingham at home and certainly could be a key player this coming season.

Ben Joyce – 6/10

Joyce got his first taste of League football last season and scored his first ever professional goal. Will spend a lot of time in the reserves this season. Still has a lot to learn but was not afraid to put his body on the line and get stuck in. Definaltey one for the future.

Blair Sturrock – 6/10

Sturrock won`t score lots of goals however you can never question his work rate. Managed to go through last season pretty much injury free for the first time in years. Will always get some stick due to his lack of goals but he plays the channels well. His play improved significantly after his dad Paul Sturrock left to manager Plymouth Argyle last season. Seemed a different player. Look forward to much of the same this season. Probably not Championship standard if we get promoted but certainly can do a job at League One level.

Simon Cox – 9/10

Town`s main goal scoring threat. Cox managed to get his 15 goals last season despite missing 2 months of the season back at Reading. The former Reading front man is the only player to score for Swindon this season which is a bit concerning. An injury to Cox could mark the beginning of a very disappointing season. We saw what happened when former top goal scorer Sam Parkin left the club. Cox scored some cracking goals this pre-season and could look to be near the top of the League One scoring charts this term.

Lee Peacock – 6/10

Peacock returns upfront after being moved to midfield by former boss Paul Sturrock. Town boss Maurice Malpas decided to play Peacock upfront in the latter stages of last season. His work rate is phenomenal however he has never been a striker who will score loads of goals. With Timlin and Easton in midfield there really was no place for Peacock to play so a move back upfront is the alternative option. Peacock did manage to score a few goals towards the end of last season. The jury will be out on Peacock`s return up front until he has had a few more games.
