Steve White, a Lou Macari singing, who was known to fans as ‘Chalky’ is one of the most recognisable names at Swindon Town between 1986-1993.

Chalky began his footballing career as an England Schoolboy International. His professional career actually started at Mangotsfield United.

After his spell with Mangotsfield, White joined Bristol Rovers and scored an impressive 20 goals in 50 League Appearances for the Gas before deciding to move to Luton.

At Luton Town the goals continued to come, scoring 25 goals in 72 league appeareances.

Over the next couple of years, White had spells at Lincoln and Charlton before returning to Bristol Rovers.

Manager Lou Macari saw the talent that Chalky possessed and managed to snap him up on a free transfer, after a contract muddle over payment for commercial work with Bristol Rovers.

His first season at the County Ground saw him not dissapoint, scoring 21 goals, including a hat trick at home to Mansfield Town. Many feel that White’s best goal was in the Vital Swindon Town/Gillingham 1987 playoff final, which helped Town to their second successive promotion.

White played for both of the teams who got promotion to the top tier of English Football, and featured in both games at Wembley Stadium.

White may be most famous for being the player brought down in the box to earn the penalty that took Swindon Town to the Premier League.

Soon after White was let go by Town and Chalky went on to sign for Hereford United before joining former Swindon team mate Paul Bodin as assistant manager of Bath City.

White went on to become manager of Chippenham Town before leaving in 2005. White is quite often seen at the County Ground watching his former Swindon Town team play, and fans who recognise the one great player, will always stop to chat about the ‘good ole days.’
