Swindon Town Midfielder Paul Smith, is bracing himself for bad news from Manager Dennis Wise when he returns from holiday.

‘I spoke to Iffy one day and he was sorting out a deal for me, and the next day he was gone.’ Smith said in relation to contract negotiations.

‘I have had no contact with Dennis Wise, but then he is on holiday, so he will probably call me when he gets back.’

‘Hopefully, he wants me to stay but if not then I will just say, ‘that’s football’, and I’ll always have good memories of my time at Swindon.’ Smith said. Swindon Town climbed to 16th in the table after Smith’s arrival and it appeared he would be instumental to ensuring Swindon Town’s survival in League One after returning against Scunthorpe at the end of the season.

‘I had verbally agreed something with the club, but whether they are going to honour that, I don’t know. Iffy said Mark Devlin will contact me but I guess he needs to speak to Dennis Wise first.’

‘So it looks like I will have to wait, but it is only June, so there is no rush.’

Smith admits that even though he had a verbal agreement, he does not want to find himself in the same situation as Steve Jenkins who was released late this week. Smith admits he has had to think about the future and has put his name out to a few clubs. ‘Since Iffy left I have put my name about and have spoken to a few people, some of which are local to me.’

‘I want to wait and see if I will stay at Swindon first, but the longer I don’t hear anything, the more I will look elsewhere.’

Smith went on to say that if he gets the same answer as Steve Jenkins he will hold no grudges. ‘I’m going on holiday next week and I will have my phone switched on but if Dennis Wise calls and says, ‘you’re not for me’, I will say, ‘fair enough’, and won’t grumble.’

‘Football is all about opinions and there will be no hard feelings from me,’ Smith Concluded.

He is an older player who has been injury prone. Did well when was fit but I think he plays in same position as wise. I think if fit would be an asset in the team.
