Phil Smith came to the club in the summer as back up to Peter Brezovan, but when he unfortunately broke his arm, Smith was pushed into the lime light. And he hasn’t looked back since.

Despite playing his football at non-league level with Margate and Crawley before this season, Smith, 27, has not looked out of place at all in the Football League. He has looked solid and commanded his box very well. He also crucially saved a penalty in the massive game against MK Dons on New Years Day. He was voted Coca-Cola player of the Month for December.

Paul Sturrock has praised Smith many times during his run in the side, and clearly rates him enough to secure his services for the next two seasons at least.
