David Byrne has left his role as Danny Wilson’s assistant to become the newly formed Head of Player Development.

The role will see Byrne oversee the Centre of Excellence, Youth and Reserve Team set-up.

Byrne has earned much praise for his eye for spotting promising players at youth level.

‘Budgie’ can take credit for bringing in Ben Tozer and Sean Morrison to the club from Plymouth Argyle, the former earning Swindon Town a tidy profit.

He also brought Nile Ranger to the club on trial only for the club to miss out after Newcastle United became interested.

It is unclear whether Byrne will be in the dugout in this role or whether another coach will be brought in to replace Ady Williams. Paul Bodin continues to look after the youth.

Danny Wilson has yet to confirm the arrival of Peter Shirtliff as his new assistant.
