Swindon Town have confirmed that former Leeds United goalkeeper David Lucas will sign for the club on July 1st.

Danny Wilson has admitted that he has been after Lucas’ services several times in the last few years at different employers.

Lucas started his career with his hometown club, Preston North End, where we enjoyed a decade long stay with loan spells at Darlington, Scunthorpe and Sheffield Wednesday. He also represented England at U-20 and U-21 level.

In 2004, Lucas left Deepdale for Chris Turners Sheffield Wednesday. Turner had left after only a few months into his Hillsborough career but remained a regular when Paul Sturrock took over.

Sheffield Wednesday won promotion in his first season via the Play-Offs, Lucas playing in the 4-2 win over Hartlepool United.

However, despite started as Wednesday’s no.1 goalkeeper he eventually lost his place and was released at the end of the 2005/06 campaign.

In early 2007 Lucas joined Barnsley as backup for Nick Colgan. He made his debut as a 2nd half sub in the 3-0 home win against Hull City but had to replaced in his first start againt Derby County after collided with Giles Barnes.

His last game for the Tykes wasn’t pretty – a 7-0 loss to West Brom.

Leeds United was the next port of call for Lucas where he has spent the last two seasons as back-up. This included a decent performance at the County Ground last season.

Lucas arrives on a two year contract but his competition for the no.1 jersey is still unknown because Phil Smith has so far not accepted a new deal.
