Swindon Town boss Maurice Malpas has been chasing some targets from a higher division, So far three have turned down the chance to come to the County Ground., Is this Malpas` fault? No way.

Town fans on another website have spent the best part of the last 2 weeks complaining that players are rejecting a move to the County Ground and claim that Maurice Malpas is the reason why.

Many of these fans blame Malpas for Ritchie Jones heading to Hartlepool. I wonder if these same fans realise that Jones took Port Vale and their manager Lee Sinnott on the same ride that he took Swindon Town and totally ignored Port Vale`s phone calls? If Paul Sturrock was still here or Dennis Wise would these fans blame Malpas? Of course not because they are big names. It seems that these fans just have to have something to complain about.

Charlie Mulgrew sat down for talks with Town over the weekend. The deal seemed sorted as the player agreed personal terms. The player then decided that he did not want to come to Swindon. This was likely due to the agent given the fact he had not spoken to Malpas since agreeing terms so how could Malpas be at fault? Mulgrew came back and said “no thanks” and looks destined to join Southend.

Fans are quick to point the finger at the innocent party which is Malpas. It seems that Malpas just can`t win. If he were chasing targets in League 2 or the Conference he would be accused of lacking ambition.

The fact that Malpas is trying to sign quality players from the division above shows that he is desperate to make a run at promotion this season. The fact is which once again fans forget, if you are trying to sign quality, you are going to have competition.

If you are a team at the top end of League One like Southend or bottom of the Championship, ofcourse these players will head there hoping to get success.

I think it`s about time that fans finally unite and get behind Malpas before getting on his back. He has made bids in excess of £100,000 for players which clubs have accepted. The people to blame are the players turning down the contracts or the agents. Not Maurice Malpas who has never been given a fair crack of the whip by Swindon Town fans.

You need to get your facts right – Ritchie was offered a week’s trial at Swindon on the pre-season tour. Would you be jumping at the chance of a TRIAL when you have a contract offer on the table. At the end of the day the lad had a decision to make over his future career and he made it. Unfortunately it wasn’t in Swindon or Port Vale’s favour but that happens all the time in football. He had plenty of clubs chasing him and he chose the one that he thought was best for him.
