Swindon Town blow chance to win promotion to League One after a poor show at Aldershot Town.

1,200 Swindon Town fans made the journey to The Rec in the hope of seeing Town seal a return to League One at the first attempt.

The party atmosphere died down quite quickly with Guy Madjo slotting home sending Shots fans into a frenzy chanting “Not Tonight” in reference to promotion.

Town looked pretty poor all game and were second best to most balls. Aldershot would take a well deserved 1-0 lead into the half time break.

Swindon were awarded a penalty on 56 minutes after Peter Vincenti was adjudged to had handled the ball in the area. Captain Paul Caddis took the penalty and slotted past the keeper to make it 1-1 giving Town hopes of promotion. Town only needed a point to guarantee League One football.

Just 5 minutes later, Aldershot would restore their advantage when Danny Hylton smashed the ball past Wes Foderingham after Foderingham bobbled the ball in front of goal making it 2-1 for Shots.

Town never seemed to get out of first gear until about the 85th minute when Lee Holmes made some impressive runs with Town fans chanting “Do It For Paolo”. Despite Holmes good play Ronan Murray was wasteful up front and Paul Benson never really got going.

Town`s final and best chance for an equaliser came just before the 90th minute when Jonathan Smith smashed the ball just wide of the Shots goal.

The final whistle went and promotion must wait for another day.

Paolo Di Canio came over to salute and thank the travelling support. It just wasn`t our day.
