STFC: Town and Supermarine Progress

In what is a historic day for football in the town of Swindon. Both Swindon Town and Swindon Supermarine progressed into the Second Round of the F.A. Cup.

Although faultering in League One, Town recorded a comfortable and dominant 4-0 victory over fellow League One strugglers Plymouth Argyle.

First half goals from Plymouthian Sean Morrison and Charlie Austin along with two more in the second half from former Argyle loanee Vincent Pericard and Vital Swindon Player of the Month Matt Ritchie gave town access to the next round.

Meanwhile, Southern League Premier Division outfit Swindon Supermarine recorded a historic 2-1 home victory over Eastwood Town of the Conference North.

The Marine goals came from former Town youngster Ashan Holgate and Ben Wells.

Town links in the Supermarine side that beat Eastwood Town

1. Mark Scott

The young goalkeeper is Danny Wilson’s 4th choice and is currently on loan to Supermarine from Town.

2. Kyle Lapham

A former Town Young Player of the Year award winner. Many expected Lapham to progress with Swindon after entering the first team set-up in 2005. Within a year he was released from the club.

4. Chris Allen

Was once very much a part of the Swindon Town first team set-up between 2007 and 2009.

Allen made 12 league appearances for Town (16 in all competitions).

5. Leigh Henry

The son of former Town terrace favourite Charlie Henry. Leigh was a pro at Town but was unable to follow in his fathers footsteps.

6. Dave Bampton

Made 4 sub outings for Town between 2002 and 2003.

Later, during his time at Tamworth, only injury would prevent him from being capped by England C

7. Ben Wells

Wells made six league appearances from the bench for Town between 2005 and 2007.

9. Ashan Holgate

Made 12 appearances for Town in all competitions including two starts in League One during the 2005/06 season.

Spent time out on loan including a stint with Paul Ince at Macclesfield Town.

10. Chris Taylor

Once a major hope for Town, Taylor emerged into the first team set-up in 2003 when Andy King gave him his big opportunity.

Taylor made four substitute appearances before disappearing from view. He was eventually released in 2006 without adding to his first team outings.

14. Sam Morris

Was a professional with Swindon Town for a year but never made it into the first team set-up. He was released in the Summer of 2009.

15. Justyn McKay

Another former youth. McKay flirted with the senior side but never made the grade. He was released by Town in December 2007.

18. Luke Hopper

(Unused sub) Was briefly a member of the first team set-up after impressing in the youth side. He never made a first team appearance.
