Former Swindon Town chairman Brian Hillier has died from a suspected stroke.

Hillier was most recently chairman of Calne Town F.C. and was very well liked by Lillywhites fans who are in shock by the news of Hillier’s passing.

Hilliers most famous time as Swindon Town chairman would be when he was found when Swindon Town were demoted in 1990 due to financial irregularities. Swindon Town had won the 2nd Division playoff final 1-0 over Sunderland and were were promoted to the old 1st division (now the Premier League).

The celebration was short lived as reports emerged of suspect payments being made to players during Lou Macari’s time as manager at the club.

Hiller and the club admitted 36 charges of breaching league rules, 35 due to illegal payments made to players, and were relegated to the Third Division. Town were later relegated to the second division on appeal.

The scandal saw Hillier given a six-month prison sentence and chief accountant Vince Farrar being put on probation.

Town have announced they will hold a minutes silence prior to the League One clash against Oldham Athletic on Saturday in honour of the former chairman.
