Q & A: Vital Walsall

1) Name:

Rich

2) Supported the Saddlers since?

1993

3) Your first Walsall match?

Walsall vs Bury 93/94

Editor: 27/12/93 – Bury won 1-0: Mark Carter scoring the only goal.

4) Your All-time favourite Walsall player(s) and why?

There are many, but the one that stood out for me was Jeff Peron. He was a french winger with flair and ability that should’ve been seen at a higher level. He did move on to Portsmouth in 1998, but he was incredible player who only ever scored one goal for the club – and I was there!

5) Your All-time least favourite Walsall players(s) and why?

Now you’re asking! Probably Kevin Harper, for the simple reason of his lack of loyalty. We gave him a go in 2000 when he couldn’t get in the team at Derby and then he moved elsewhere because he wanted to play for a bigger club. He then went on a merry-go-round and ended up back at the Banks’s to win the title in 2007. Unfortunately he got an offer from Scotland and rejected us again….the cheek!

6) 2 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses so far are you happy with Walsall’s start?

It’s been a worrying start I have to say. We have not scored many goals, but the defence is amazing! I’m optimistic though especially after our win at Tranmere on Saturday. We shall see.

7) Are the fans still fully behind Chris Hutchings?

I think the fans are behind Hutch, but there are always the over-critical ones who think just because they know what 4-4-2 means, they could manage a football team. However, everyone seems to be giving Hutch a chance and hopefully he can deliver. He has just signed a new contract so we will let him lead the way!

8) How is Sam Parkin doing at the Bescott?

…..or Super Sammy Parkin! He’s been indifferent form for us. He’s bagged a couple of goals and shown he is a good player. However, his on-pitch relationships with other strikers in the squad has led to the additon of Darren Byfield, which should be a cause for concern if you’re Sam Parkin.

9) Who has been your most impressive player so far this season and who has disappointed?

I suppose at the moment, I am impressed by the impact our young full-back Darryl Westlake. He has shown that he is capable of plying his trade in the Saddlers first team throughout the season, keeping Rhys Weston out of the side. The worst……too soon to tell, but Stephen Roberts just can’t stay fit and is a worry for the future.

10) Score Prediction – Walsall vs. Swindon Town:

…I am going to have to say 2-1 Walsall, although if we score at home, it will be a miracle!
