Onuora Comments On Brentford

After Swindon Town were effectively relegated to League Two yesterday against Brentford, Manager Iffy Onuora spoke about the teams lacklustre performance.

Defending yesterday was diabolical and Onuora knew it as he spoke to the local media, ‘We needed to defend properly in order to go on and win the game but we didn’t do that. I think that sometimes if teams pull us around then you can only ask so much of defenders. Today we couldn’t defend a straight ball up front and that was unacceptable. We should have been able to defend that. They were gifts in terms of goal.’

The only bright spot on the afternoon came from an Aaron Brown goal which brought the score to 2-1 at one stage. ‘Aaron took his goal well and it was a shame that we couldn’t include him from the start. We had to make the changes at half-time. I thought we needed the experience in Smith and Whalley from the start, but second half we had to change things around.’

‘Chris McPhee acquitted himself quite well but I wasn’t over happy with the movement around him up front and we spoke about that at half-time.’

In terms of giving in and playing young players to get experience for next season, Onuora now appears to be playing for pride to ensure Town do not finish bottom of League One. ‘There are two games to go and I have an idea of how we will be lining up at Bristol City. I won’t be blooding in young players for the sake of it, I will be playing my strongest team at Bristol City.’

Swindon effectively became the first ex Premiership club to go from the top league in English football to the bottom as Onuora comments, ‘The league table doesn’t lie and we have been playing catch up for too long. Whatever the league table says after two more games it will be in black and white. We never really recaptured the forward momentum and the pressure has told on too many players. There was a lot of ground to make up, but it looks as though we have been found wanting.’

‘I don’t remember Rhys making a save in open play. All I remember is poor defending from our point of view. There was more action in our their box over the two halves.’

‘I am disappointed but there are two games to go, and we won’t start writing obituaries of our season just yet,’

Onuora is contracted as manager until the end of this season but it is widely expected he will get a contract extention as he is favoured by many members of the Swindon Town board.
