Danny Wilson will be taking his players to Austria for pre-season training.
The week long trip is the fourth summer in a row that Swindon have ventured outside of the United Kingdom – the third that we’ve gone to Austria.
In 2006, Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet’s Town participated in the Copa Ibiza. Town lost 1-0 to Huddersfield Town but beat Ibiza Selección XI 5-0 meaning Swindon won the competition.
In 2007, Austria was the destination of choice for Paul Sturrock as Town took on Romanian outfit Jiul Petrosani and drew 0-0. Next up was a 4-0 win over SV Brandl Bau Bad Ischl, a game that featured many trialists along with future Player of the Season Miguel Comminges. Town finished the tour with a 1-0 loss to Italian side AC Rodengo Saiano.
In 2008, we returned to Austria but with a far more impressive set of opponants.
Simon Cox was the star of the tour and scored his first in the 2-2 draw with Romanian giants Steaua Bucuresti.
Another big name followed in the form Fenerbahçe SK in front of the Turkish TV cameras and an impressive Sarı Kanaryalar following. Luis Aragonés, who had just won the European Championships with Spain, was in the dugout for the first time.
The opposition included Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos and internationals such as Burak Yılmaz and Gökhan Gönül but it was former Chelsea forward Mateja Ke?man put Fenerbahçe after 14 minutes. However, the friendly is best remembered for a stunning Simon Cox goal from distance.
The tour concluded with a 2-1 loss to Czech Republic outfit Tescoma Zlín (Simon Cox scoring again for Swindon).
Town have yet to confirm opposition for this years tour.
