Vital Swindon talk to Vital Leicester

1) A brief run-down of your season.

It’s been a great season so far in a number of ways. When we were relegated last year there were many fears among the supporters that we might find ourselves in a Forest or Leeds position struggling to get back up, but fortunately it’s not been like that. We’ve managed to be consistent all season long, and I think only two defeats all season just shows how difficult to beat we’ve been. The players that Nigel Pearson has brought in; mostly loans and free transfers, have really done the business for us this season and it’s a credit to both the management and players that we’re in the position we’re in right now. With the exception of Matt Oakley and Steve Howard we also have one of the youngest teams in the league, so hopefully the future’s bright.

2) How are you finding League One football?

On a personal note I’ve really enjoyed it. I think I speak for others when I say it’s been nice to win games on a consistent basis and be one of the best teams in the division for a change. It’s also been great visiting the various grounds around the country, one’s that bring much more character than some we’ve seen in the last few years.

3) Toughest opposition so far?

Millwall proved to be a tough game at home, and we ended up losing 1-0. They managed to score quite early on in the game, and from then on they were extremely difficult to break down. It’s no surprise that they’re in amongst the promotion hopefuls of the league. Saying that, Huddersfield have also given us two very tough games this season. We won 3-2 away with a last minute goal, and came from behind twice to win 4-2 at the Walkers a couple of weeks ago.

4) Best player from the opposition you’ve seen play against Leicester this season?

Zak Whitbread looked very solid at centre back when Millwall came and beat us. He never looked like getting beaten that day.

5) Favourite moment of the season so far?

There’s been so many, but if I had to put my finger on one it would be Lloyd Dyer’s last minute winner at Huddersfield. We’d been winning 2-0 for a large part of the game and ended up conceding twice, but luckily Lloyd popped up to set up some mad celebrations in the stands!

6) How far can Nigel Pearson take you in the long term?

Realistically we could be looking at competing in the Championship, providing we see this season out in the manner we’ve gone through it so far that is. The Championship is such an unpredictable division that anything can happen, and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be aiming for a top-half finish next season. We all just hope that Pearson isn’t head-hunted by any of the bigger fish in the months to come; he’s a vital cog in our works.

7) Did you go to Wembley in ’93? If so, what are your memories.

Fortunately I’m a little young to have gone to that, but I’ve heard all the stories. And as the chant goes, yes, I’m sure many of us did cry at Wembley that day! Such a phenomenal game though, incredible comeback only to be broken with that late (dodgy I must add!) penalty. You don’t see many play-off finals like that one anymore that’s for sure…
