Swindon Town suffer Wembley heartbreak for the second time in two years after losing 2-0 to a much more spirited Chesterfield side.
Chesterfield started off the better of the 2 teams, and Town could still be playing now and would never had scored. Swindon are desperately missing the link up play between Paul Caddis and Matt Ritchie.
Both teams went into the half time break level. Shortly after Oliver Risser would gift Chesterfield their first goal by passing the ball past Wesley Foderingham into his own net to give Chesterfield a well deserved 1-0 lead.
Town had plenty of crosses going into the box from Lee Holmes as Town attacked the second half towards their fans but it just wasn’t going to happen.
Town boss Paolo Di Canio increased his attacking options by bringing on Ronan Murray who was pretty ineffective.
Town kept pushing for an equaliser and Town almost had it just narrowly going over Tommy Lee’s goal post.
Town would continue to push forward but Chesterfield’s Craig Westcarr managed to put the game beyond doubt just after the referee stated there was 4 minutes of added time.
Westcarr would go one on one with Foderingham and slot home infront of a jubilant Chesterfield support to ensure that Chesterfield are this years winners of the Johnstones Paint Trophy.
Our friends down the A420 at Oxford United will be joining Chesterfield fans in celebrating their win this evening but Town are still 4 points clear at the top of the table with two games in hand on second place Shrewsbury.
The league is still the priority as Paolo Di Canio stated after the match, whats done is done, now lets win promotion as early as we possibly can.
Couldn’t do much about either goal. Normal “safe hands”
Got stuck in, another good game for Devera
Stupidly gifted Chesterfield the first goal which meant Town were chasing the games and nervy for rest of the game.
Not as good as he has been. Is it time to bring Flint back alongside Alan Mac?
Impressive first game in a Swindon Town shirt. Better than Cibo and Kennedy for sure.
Pretty poor, pretty greedy, pretty petulant. Misses Paul Caddis massively.
Got stuck in, had to be sacrificed to try and get a goal.
Usual reliable self.
Was either really good at crossing or really poor. Needs consistancy.
Ran around but was never going to score
Came close to scoring but not his day.
Ran around a bit, not sure what Di Canio see’s in Murray. Doesn’t really offer anything,
Never had a lot to do, had some stray passes, certainly didn’t look lazy like Sheffield Wednesday fans said he was.
Never had a lot to do.
Paolo Di Canio 5/10 – Should have had Flint on bench or did he get injured again? Not sure if having 2 new loan players does morale of the team any good.
John Sheridan 8/10 – Knew Town would use the wings, Had 2 men on Ritchie and Holmes and isolated play. A bright note in an otherwise season to forget for Chesterfield.
