League Two side Swindon Town have beaten Barclays Premier League Side Wigan Athletic to win their ‘cup final’.

Playing in front of a sold out crowd at the County Ground Town more than matched their Premier League counterparts.

Wigan took 1-0 lead after Wigan were given a penalty due to Aden Flint tripping Callum McManaman in the box. Town keeper Wes Foderingham saved the penalty taken by Ben Watson but Wigan would score when the ball deflected off the post was slotted home by McManaman.

Swindon and the fans responded well to falling behind by upping their game.

On 40 minutes the game was square when Alan Connell headed home past Ali Al Habsi to level the game going into half time.

Paolo Di Canio would bring on Paul Benson in place of the largely ineffective Ronan Murray at half time.

On 76 minutes Swindon would take the lead as Matt Ritchie fired the ball towards Paul Benson who defelected the ball past Al-Habsi.

Wigan wouldn’t go down without a fight and brought Victor Moses and Conor Sammon on to try and score an equaliser and force a replay but Town managed to weather the storm and after 3 minutes added time was announced Town maintained posession to secure a famous win.

Player Ratings

Wes Foderingham
Made some good saves, didnt have a lot to do really.

Paul Caddis
Got forward enough to put several balls into the box.

Aden Flint
Silly challenge for the penalty but made amends with a great afternoon.

Callum Kennedy
Was the match sponsors man of the match, Had a good game on the left, we didnt miss Ridehalgh.

Simon Ferry
Another great game for the former Celtic man. Bossed midfield alongside Smith.

Jonathan Smith
Made some vital tackles, unsung hero this season.

Matt Ritchie
Typical Ritchie performance, passed the ball more which was a bonus.

Alan Connell
Took his goal well, got forward and caused all sorts of problems. Bit confused why he was taken off really!

Ronan Murray
Poor game by Murray missed a great chance early on. Was substituted at half time.

Raffaele De Vita
Best game in a Swindon shirt. Oozing in confidence.

Alan McCormack
Usual steady self.

Paul Benson
Looked good when he came on, Think him and Connell will make a good partnership.

Lukas Magera
Not sure why he came on for Connell. Magera is always one I said was too good for League Two and would be better suited higher up. He wasn’t. Must return to europe.
Not on long enough to judge.

Wigan Penalty
Stone wall penalty no questions about the penalty at all.

FA Cup Fourth Round
Town now go into the FA Cup fourth round for the first time since 1996 and will be ball number 20.

The draw is tomorrow afternoon.
