Swindon Go Top Of League Two

Shrewsbury Town proved to be a tough nut to crack at the County Ground this evening as Swindon Town rode their luck including being let off a stone wall penalty to win 2-1 this evening.

The Shrews started off by far the best team with some neat passing and completely dominated the first half of proceedings.

Mark Wright would give the visitors a well earned lead on 40 minutes when he headed the ball past Wesley Foderingham.

Swindon Town would struggle to string two passes together in the first half and looked the worst they had been all season.

Some mindless idiots would boo the Swindon players off the pitch as Shrewsbury looked good value for their lead heading into the second half.

In an effort to shake things up, Paolo Di Canio carted off Billy Bodin who had looked lost most of the match and brought on Alan Connell.

Early in the second half it could have been 2-0 to the visitors. Terry Gornell was tripped by Swindon Centre back just in front of the referee as Gornell was set to shoot at Foderingham, amazingly and to Swindon’s luck the referee waved play on. As a Town fan I can say YES this was a penalty.

With Town struggling to create anything through midfield, Jonathan Smith who had a woeful match was replaced with Simon Ferry who seemed to breath life back into Town’s midfield.

On 64 minutes Alan Connell would beat Shrews keeper Chris Neal to make it 1-1. Cue a great sigh of relief from the Swindon fans who thought this was not to be their day.

On 68 minutes, Di Canio took off Daniel Boateng who in fairness was absolutely appalling and replaced him with Oliver Risser. Sub number 2 seemed spot on once again.

On 76 minutes Luke Rooney fired a shot at goal which it the cross back and came back to Alan Connell who slotted home number 2 for the home side.

Swindon would hold out for a nervy win which in all fairness probably should have been a draw but we are top of the league, Let’s enjoy it whilst we can.

Player Ratings

Wesley Foderingham
Kicking was dodgy, please catch the ball.

Daniel Boateng
Absolute rubbish, Is the club shop out of adult size shorts?

Paul Caddis
Brilliant shift, only decent player in the first half.

Alessandro Cibocchi
Did his job, did nothing to really impress, was almost at fault for equaliser.

Matt Ritchie
Some great balls into the box, good game.

Alan McCormack
Great game, was very very lucky not to be sent off.

Lee Cox
Decent enough game, absent second half.

Luke Rooney
Vanished in the first half, couldn’t get going, should have scored second goal.

Jonathan Smith
Rare poor game, will let him off.

Billy Bodin
Largely absent got knocked off the ball too easily, was rightly subbed.

Paul Benson
Decent enough game, silly booking for time wasting at end of the match.

Oliver Risser
Looked assured of himself. A thousand times better than Boateng.

Simon Ferry
Bit sluggish still getting over illness, breathed new life into the game.
Two cracking goals, game livened up when he came on.

Manager Rating
Paolo Di Canio – Mixed it up a bit but maybe shouldn’t have. Got the subs spot on and gave some stick to the Shrewsbury fans who chanted abusive songs about his mother all game long. 7/10

Opponent Rating
Graham Turner – Made Swindon look second best for first 60 minutes. Rightly angry at missed penalty. Best team Swindon have played this season. 9/10
