Swindon Town manager Paul Sturrock is close to signing striker Adebayo Akinfenwa according to the Western Daily Press.

Akinfenwa had spent the last two seasons at League One side Swansea City scoring 14 goals over the course of the 2 seasons and is currently out of contract at the Liberty Stadium.

Akinfenwa was a target for former Swindon Town manager Andy King before he signed with The Swans.

The Western Daily Press reports that Akinfenwa is looking for a move closer to London and Swindon certainly fits that bill. The local newspaper also says that Town are fighting off other suitors such as newly promoted Championship side Scunthorpe and heated rivals Gillingham.

The out of contract Swansea players best season came in League One for Torquay United when he bagged 14 goals for the relegation threatened club that season.

Akinfenwa had also spent time at Boston United, Leyton Oriennt, Rushden & Diamonds and Doncaster Rovers before joining Torquay United and Swansea City.

That would be a great move for you and would set you up well for an assault on promotion!

Not sure if we can start thinking promotion just yet, Gills are also linked with Akinfenwa. Sturrock does know how to get teams out of League One though.
