Swindon Town climb to Fourth in League One with an impressive win over one of the favourites to get promoted this season, Luton Town.

This game was played in perhaps the worst conditions possible as it was pouring down with rain but goals from Lee Peacock and Craig Easton ensured that Town fans went home happy.

Luton started the match very much the better side. Luton would get the ball up front very quickly and made the Swindon back four work very hard in the opening 10 minutes.

Town would then be the better team for the remainder of the first half however it became clear the team would have to work hard to try and score goals. Their efforts would bare fruit in the second half.

After the half time break Luton almost went up 1-0 with a Darren Currie free kick that landed on the top of the goal infront of the Luton support on the Stratton Bank.

Swindon responded right away with a shot by Christian Roberts which looked to have cross the line cleared by Luton’s Chris Coyne according to the match official.

Town would not be denied again on the 56th minute as Sofiane Zaaboub put in a great cross to Lee Peacock who headed home the ball to make it 1-0 to Swindon which left Luton reeling. The players celebrated the goal with a ‘rock the baby’ celebration on show, a tribute to centreback Jerel Ifil who had become a Father for the second time on Friday afternoon according to the official website.

Only minutes later the home side should have went up 2-0 with Luton goalkeeper Dean Brill dropping a pass that landed right infront of Blair Sturrock however Sturrock was not able to shoot the ball into the open goal.

On the 66th minute Dave Edwards scored his first goal for Luton since arrivng from League Two side Shrewbury Town making the score 1-1.

The atmosphere in the Town end went rather flat after Luton’s equalizer. Blair Sturrock would go off to Ironic cheers, perhaps because of his open goal miss and would be replaced by Ibon Arrieta who would become a hero minutes later.

On the 88th minute Ibon Arrieta put in a great cross which bounced around in the Luton penalty area before Craig Easton got on the end of it scoring the winning goal for Swindon and stunning the Promotion hopefuls in the process.

3 Minutes were added at the end of the game which Luton lobbed the ball forward hoping to get a late goal to send them home with a share of the points.

The final whistle blew and on a wet day at the County Ground, Swindon found themselves with 4 points and 4th in the League One table.

Player Ratings

Phil Smith – 7
Very good performance from Smith, The goal that Luton scored was a cracking goal and Smith couldn’t have done much more to stop it. His kicking was off at times but this may have been down to the weather.

Jack Smith – 7
Worked well at the back as our defenders have for the last year now. Nothing special but got the job done.

Jamie Vincent 6.5
Looked a bit out of his depth the first half but put in a strong performance in the second half.

Jerel Ifil – 7
Superb. Was lucky not to score his second ever League goal for Swindon. His work rate is fantastic.

Hasney Aljofree – 7
I don’t think you could name a better back 2 than Aljofree and Ifil in League One. A good leader. Will make it hard for Ady Williams to get back in the team when he is healthy.

Christian Roberts – 7
Started off a bit sloppy but his second half performance may have been his best in a Swindon Town shirt. He started last season off well but trailed off towards the end. Roberts has looked impressive this season and we hope it continues.

Craig Easton – 7
Fantastic first league start for the former Leyton Orient star. He took his goal well and will hopefully get the nod on Saturday against Cheltenham.

Michael Pook – 6
Put in some good tackles and looks as if he will get more stuck in this season. Worked well alongside of Easton.

Sofiane Zaaboub – 7
Best performance of the season for Zaaboub. Crossed the ball into the box often and looked the player of old.

*Lee Peacock – 8
Scored a goal and was very vocal. When the team left the pitch at the end of the match you could see just how much the win meant to Peacock. Again a true leader and we hope he gets the new contract desires so much.

Blair Sturrock – 6
Blair’s best performance this year. He is not the solution to our goal scoring crisis though. It baffles us as to why he was selected to start ahead of Ibon Arrieta however he did ok but the ironic cheers when Sturrock Jr. went off showed that fans do not have faith in him to score goals. He did run around though and gave 100%. He just looks a bit too much out of his depth. Sturrock would be more effective coming off the bench.

Miguel Comminges – 6
Ran his socks off but made a stupid jump and smashed heads with team mate Hasney Aljofree. Has loads of pace and put a couple of balls into the box.

Ibon Arrieta – 7
This man should start. Ran his heart out and showed loads of talent. Set up the winning goal. Looked fantastic. Please Sturrock, start this player at Cheltenham.

Manager Rating
Paul Sturrock 8/10 – Sturrock did well this game. His back 4 again were impressive whilst the team worked as a unit to get forward and create goals. Sturrock must have had a word in Christian Roberts’ ear at half time as he came out a totally different player the second half. Perhaps Sturrock’s only mistake was starting son Blair over Arrieta however I am sure Luggy has his reasons.

Opponent Rating
Kevin Blackwell 7/10 – In truth the visitors were unlucky not to get anything from this game. Blackwell knew how stong our back four are and he tested them quick and often. With the loss of striker Sam Parkin who would no doubt have scored against his former club, Blackwell knew he would have to hit us hard and often to create anything.
