Last week the Swindon Advertiser declared that Swindon Town target John Campbell was set for a move to fellow League One outfit Leyton Orient.

Word was that Town had not contacted the Newcastle Benfield forward who was desperate to move to Wiltshire.

This resulted in a utter furore from some Swindon Town fans who instantly thumped their keyboards in outrage as it appeared the ‘next Charlie Austin’ had been allowed to slip from our hands.

However, Danny Wilson has since come out in his defence of his decision to look elsewhere for a forward player who will be immediately ready for League One football.

Despite Campbell’s hat-trick in the reserves against Torquay United, Danny Wilson admitted that he wasn’t fully convinced by the forwards ability as he ‘was well short in other areas, but we want to have a look at him again. We aren`t going to commit ourselves to somebody we aren`t sure about yet.’

You cannot really argue with that. Sure he might cost peanuts but if he REALLY wants to join Swindon then he will take that trial. However, Football League contract offers are not easy to come by so you cannot begrudge Campbell if he hastily accepts a deal with Orient.
