Goalkeeper Phil Smith who was released by Swindon Town has opened talks with Paul Sturrock with a view of signing for Southend United.

Smith played under Sturrock at Swindon Town and a source close to The Shrimpers told the Southend Echo, “He has worked under Paul Sturrock before earlier on in his career and he knows a few of the other players that are here already.

“He’s therefore keen to come in and play for Southend and we’d be delighted to have him here too.”

The Echo did not name Phil Smith as the goalkeeper in question however we are certain that Smith is the man in question.

Smith was Town’s longest serving player before being released following Swindon Town’s promotion back to League One.

Should the singing be complete, Smith will join fellow Swindon Town alumni, Michael Timlin, Barry Corr and Blair Sturrock at Roots Hall.
