Plymouth Argyle midfielder Simon Walton is in talks with Swindon according to the local press.

Walton, 21, can operate in the both the centre of midfield and defence. He was Plymouth Argyle’s record transfer fee paid when he joined from Queens Park Rangers for £750,000 last summer.

Simon Walton’s career is something of a worry. It began with a promising start for his hometown club Leeds United playing on a regular basis as a teenager in The Championship.

He then dropped down the pecking order at Elland Road but was still seen as a significant prospect for (then Premiership outfit) Charlton Athletic to pay £500,000 for his services in 2006 while still only 19 years old.

Without making a league outing for Charlton, Walton was shipped out of loan to Ipswich Town and Cardiff City to gain experience. After only one season and still no games with Charlton he was sold at a loss to Queens Park Rangers for £200,000 in 2007.

At QPR he failed to break into the first team under December before joining Hull City on loan helping them in their push to the Premiership. He had returned to London before Hull’s Wembley win against Bristol City.

Yet again it didn’t work out for Walton for his full-time employers but his successful loan spell at Hull City was enough for Paul Sturrock to play £750,000 to bring him to Plymouth Argyle last summer.

Walton started the season as a regular for the Pilgrims before losing his place in early September after a poor start to Plymouth’s season.

Sturrock offered Walton a way back into the 1st team in December but was sent-off in the 2-0 loss at Barnsley.

He finished the season at Blackpool on loan, but only managed one outing for the Seasiders.

A move to Swindon would be his first experience at League One level and it would surely on the basis of a financial loss for Plymouth!

I’ll keep you posted.

I couldn’t believe that they paid £750,000 on what must have been the basis of a good loan spell at Hull.

Walton is potentially very bad news – not many of his former clubs hold me in high regard. However, L1 football could be the kick up the backside he needs and the tough midfielder we definately need.
