It’s derby day at the County Ground as Swindon Town welcome Cheltenham Town to the County Ground as League One action returns to Wiltshire.
Swindon Town have never won against Cheltenham. Swindon have played Cheltenham 3 times drawing once and losing twice.
‘It is important we start getting that attitude that we need to win games. If we do lose games by being a bit kamikaze and a bit gung-ho then so be it.’
Swindon Town gaffer Maurice Malpas
Swindon Town welcome back 2 strikers, Barry Corr and Billy Paynter. Corr returns from a shoulder injury whilst Paynter returns from a 3 match suspension. Craig Easton will remain on the sidelines with a calf injury. Swindon have only lost once in 2008.
Paynter has struggled to find the net recently and confidence looks low. We are hoping that Paynter can return to goalscoring ways after his suspension.
Cheltenham currently sit 4 points above the League One drop zone. Damian Spencer is likely to miss the match as he battles a virus. Former Bristol City player Steve Brooker is likely to feature. Alex Russell and Steven Gillespie also have played at Bristol City.
The on loan Bristol City midfielder was influential in helping City gain promotion to the Championship and was named in the League One team of the week over the weekend for his fine display against Brighton.
The last time the teams met was in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and Cheltenham dominated the match at the County Ground. Blair Sturrock scored the only goal for Swindon in the 3-1 loss. To be fair at the time there were more pressing issues at hand as the very existance of STFC was at threat.
2-1 Swindon Town win, Simon Cox and Barry Corr to score for Swindon. Brooker to score for Cheltenham. Crowd to be around 7,300.
