Goalkeeper Phil Smith has been told he will not be offered a new contract this afternoon and will leave Swindon Town when his contract expires.

Smith had been at Town for 6 seasons and had been a key figure in Town’s 2006/07 promotion to League One following an injury to Peter Brezovan. Phil would be named the Vital Swindon Town player of the season that year.

Smith will be remembered mostly for his heroic effort against Charlton Athletic in the League One playoff final where Smith replaced David Lucas following an arm injury. Smith would be a hero in a penalty shootout that would send Town to the League One playoff final.

Ironically Smith’s last heroic effort was in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy where Phil saved several penalty shots to see Town ultimately get to Wembley again in the JPT Final.

Smith’s final appearance in a Town shirt was against Gillingham this season where Town lost 2-1 but still clinched promotion back to League One.
