There was a bit of hype about trialist Simone Materazzi going into today’s match against a Verona Select XI however it was a debut to forget and if you read between the lines, the trial could be over before it even began.

Town boss Paolo Di Canio stated it didn’t cost anything to take a look at the player however he got off to the worst possible start by tripping Lorenzo Zerbato in the area after coming on just 4 minutes prior, to concede a penalty which Filippo Piasentin slotted past Wesley Foderingham.

Materazzi’s misery would continue though when Di Canio had seen enough and turfed him off on 65 minutes, just 25 minutes into his debut and replaced him with Samsung win a contract winner Chris Smith for the remainder of the match.

Perhaps Di Canio took him off as he was trying too hard or pressure of the situation got to him so Paolo decided to take him off to calm down and relax.

Reading between the lines it doesn’t bode well for Materazzi though.
