Former Swindon Town winger Luke Rooney has joined Ryman Premier League side Maidstone United.

Rooney arrived from Gillingham during the Paolo Di Canio era but soon fell out of favour and secured several loan moves away from Swindon without really impressing.

Rooney was set to join League One rivals Crawley Town on a permanent deal after a loan spell ended in January from Town who then agreed to terminate his contract but a change of manager and lack of first team football put an end to that.

Rooney had told the Maidstone United official website that he had fallen out of love with football.

“Being brutally honest I`d fallen out of love with the game in recent months and for someone who lived and breathed it when I was growing up that`s difficult to admit.

“I know some of the lads at Maidstone, came down to train last night and really, really enjoyed it. I`ve had several offers in recent weeks – some from league clubs, others in the Conference and a couple of Ryman clubs.

We wish Rooney luck at his new club.
