Division Three

Town recovered from Saturday’s disappointing 3-1 reversal against Sheffield Wednesday to record their first away win in 4 months at Prenton Park.
Don’t let the narrow scoreline deceive you. This was a comprehensive and deserved victory for Swindon who dominated proceedings from start to finish. The biggest travesty was perhaps the fact that they only managed to score once against poor opposition.

A meagre attendance of 2648 on a wet drizzly night saw Swindon take control from the first whistle. The only goal of the game arrived as early as the 12th minute.

Kenny Stroud released Dave Syrett down the left and he in turn clipped the ball towards a plethora of red-shirted bodies at the back post. One of them, Dave Moss, delicately nodded the ball back across the 6-yard box where Trevor Anderson was on hand to glance home a header past ex-England goalkeeper Gordon West.

Despite the loss of Stroud shortly before half-time through injury, Town never looked in any danger. Throughout the evening Moss was taking the proverbial out of Tranmere full-back Ray Mathias time and again. It was just a shame that the goals ratio couldn’t match the chances created.

Anderson scooped over from a Moss centre, but Swindon saved their worst miss until 3 minutes from time. Syrett sprang the offside trap and fed O’Brien who laid the ball inside for Moss, but as the winger raced clear he could only fire wide of West and the goal.

Town went on to draw their next 4 games on the road before being hammered 5-0 at Selhurst Park by Crystal Palace in mid-April.

Is that former Town winger Steve Peplow in the Tranmere squad? I think so, he was from those parts I believe.
