It`s similar to the age old debate, what came first the chicken or the egg. It`s the should Sam Parkin is return to Swindon Town debate!
Every game Swindon don`t score a goal, a plethora of fans hit the internet and post “bring back Sam Parkin” (clearly not our forum of course, infact last time I checked our forum there was tumbleweed bouncing through there), the debate rages on with fans sending text messages onto BBC Radio Swindon demanding the former fans favourite returns to the County Ground.
Super Sammy has found his goal scoring touch again for beleaguered League Town side Luton Town and many fans begin to drool at the prospect of a Simon Cox, Sam Parkin strike force. Would they be better than Tommy Mooney and Sam Parkin or Alan Mayes & Andy Rowland? Well I doubt we will ever know.
Swindon`s chairman Andrew Fitton has already said that Parkin won`t be coming back despite the constant ‘my sources saying that Town have made a bid for Parkin.’ The question was raised first of all at Swindon Town`s fans forum at the beginning of the season. Fitton clearly stated, ‘you don`t go back’, although he did say ‘it’s not to say we didn’t think about (bringing Parkin back).
One must question, can Parkin still score at this level? He has suffered from injury after injury ever since he left Swindon after 3 seasons at the County Ground scoring more than 70 goals.
Swindon have stretched the budget as far as they can really and likely would not be able to meet Parkin`s wage demands after Millwall turned down signing Parkin due to his wages. Let`s be honest, Parkin must be on a fair whack given the fact he signed for Luton in a lucrative £300,000 transfer from Ipswich Town. Parkin is likely still on Championship wages and that would become a huge stumbling block in itself.
Swindon for years has lived beyond its means due to incompetent management in the past and now that the ship has finally gotten out of turbulent waters, do you really think that Fitton would take us back down that route given the current economic climate? Not likely.
If Parkin was to return to Swindon it would likely be at the end of the season if Luton fail to remain in the Football League failing to overturn the harsh 30 point deficit the football league placed on the club prior to the current campaign.
Parkin likely would not be willing to play in the Blue Square Premier and thus Swindon could then pounce but again it`s very unlikely. Parkin himself has said he doubts he would return to Swindon due to the expectation.
As far as we go, we believe we need to look forward, not back. Super Sammy will always be a legend at the County Ground but let`s not think for one second that we need more goals, Our current problem is down to dodgy defending not a lack of goal scoring.
