FA CUP 2nd Round: Wrexham

Swindon Town missed out on both a local draw with Bath City and a much needed meeting with rivals Oxford United by being drawn away to Dean Saunders’ Wrexham.

Financial woes saw the Welsh side drop out of the Football League in 2007. Before then the idea of a trip to the Racecourse Ground would conjure up feelings of dread amongst the Town fans who look up past meetings.

Only 1,767 people witnessed Swindon’s last victory away at Wrexham thanks to a Colin Gordon penalty after only 3 minutes.

In 1995 a Karl Connolly hat-trick inspired the Red Dragons to a 4-3 win over a Swindon side who would pretty comfortably win the 3rd tier championship that season.

Antoine van der Linden put Town ahead in 2001 before Waynne Phillips levelled in the 2nd half.

The following season Swindon fought back from 2-0 down to leave Wrexham with a point thanks to goals from Giuliano Grazioli and a last gasp Alan Reeves leveller.

A Play-Off bound Swindon couldn’t get anything at Wrexham in 2004 losing 3-2 while Dennis Wise’s first loss as Town manager came at the Racecourse despite taking the lead through an outstanding free-kick by Paul Evans (Town conceding two goals within a minute in the second half).

In between those was the 2-1 opening day loss of the 2004/05 season. Andrew Caton scored on his Swindon debut that day.

So there you have it… Our lacklustre form in the North East of Wales! Funnily enough Wrexham have failed to beat Swindon at the County Ground during that entire time so they won’t fancy a replay.

It certainly is not going to be easy – hopefully we will play with this in mind.
