The People newspaper, the publication that went through great measures to sink Swindon in the late 80’s, early 90’s.
Most fans have probably moved on, perhaps some haven’t but The People have this weekend printed a good article on our new leader as he prepares for his career in football management.
Journalist Dave Kidd asks what are probably the most asked questions since he joined Swindon, ‘Why!?!’ and as always Paolo Di Canio replies with he same answers just structured differently.
‘Only snobby people think they are too good for this – I would stay every night in the worst area of England, to see my team win and to celebrate together.’
Despite his big name status, Di Canio stresses to remind people that he played lower league football. He gives Dave Kidd an example from his days on loan at Ternana during the 1986/87 seasons:
‘You would go and play away in the south of Italy and there were Mafia people with their guns, it could be dangerous, I played in very bad areas – only the passion can push you on.’
Whether it’s being cynical or just realistic to believe that Di Canio will leave at the first opportunity is one thing but at least the guy gives you words of hope. You cannot fault his commitment to the Swindon and his drive to succeed in this game, Di Canio proclaimed that:
‘I need this job, not in terms of money, I need it because it is something I feel in my heart and my stomach. This is my passion.’
If Paolo Di Canio practices what he preaches then we’ll do just fine.
